The design for this Philadelphia rowhouse involved a full interior renovation of the original three-story structure with a new two-story brick and glass addition at the rear. On the ground floor, floor-to-ceiling glass doors at the addition connect the new kitchen with tranquil outdoor patio space. A walk-out roof deck above the addition, accessible from the third floor, features an outdoor seating area with fire pit. From there, a new spiral staircase ascends to a larger roof deck above the third floor with additional seating, kitchenette, and outdoor dining areas all with panoramic skyline views. Skylights at the first and third floor ceilings provide natural light and reinforce connections between indoor and outdoor space. The elements are arranged for comfort while also providing privacy in an urban environment. We worked closely with our clients to create plan layouts best suited for their needs and in better keeping with today’s living standards, maximizing ceiling heights throughout the house. The existing basement ceilings were 7-feet tall with portions only at crawl-space depth. To capitalize on this opportunity, the basement was excavated and expanded to provide full 9-foot ceiling heights throughout.
