This house was designed for Philadelphia based clients planning to eventually retire to Falmouth. The property in Falmouth has been in the family for several generations and these clients wanted a residence that would continue to house multiple generations and accommodate a busy, modern lifestyle.
We razed a beach cottage that was beyond salvage and replaced it with a classic, Dutch gambrel roof, shingle style house. It is a traditional New England, coastal house. As found in houses of this style, there is very simple detailing, but the use of classical proportion and scale throughout.
Our clients wanted open living with the house being oriented toward spectacular views to the north and west. The western view is over the ocean and the northern view looks out over protected open space and a tidal pond. We maintained a sense of transparency throughout the house and natural light is abundant. The house feels larger than it actually is thanks to many windows that bring the outside in.
