What is a New Old House?
post by: Peter Zimmerman
“The New Old House” typically refers to a style of architecture that combines traditional design principles with modern amenities and construction techniques. It reflects a desire to capture the charm and character of older homes while incorporating contemporary comforts and technologies. An aspect we look at very closely is the vernacular of the area in which the house is being built. We examine the local materials and the appropriate architectural style. We want the house to look as if it has always been in that location and grew organically.
When people build or renovate a “New Old House,” they often focus on:
1. Architectural Style: The exterior design of the house is usually inspired by traditional styles such as Colonial, Victorian, Tudor, or Craftsman. This includes elements like pitched roofs, dormer windows, and intricate detailing.
2. Materials: Emphasis is placed on using high-quality materials that evoke a sense of craftsmanship and durability. This might include hardwood floors, reclaimed wood, stone, or brick.
3. Interior Layout: The interior layout often reflects a more open and modern design to accommodate contemporary living preferences. However, it may also include features like crown molding, wainscoting, or coffered ceilings for a classic touch.
4. Modern Amenities: While the exterior and interior might evoke a sense of the past, the home is equipped with modern amenities such as smart home technology, energy-efficient systems, and updated kitchens and bathrooms.
5. Landscaping: The landscaping around a New Old House is often designed to complement the architectural style, with attention to traditional garden layouts, pathways, and the use of classic plant varieties.
6. Energy Efficiency: Despite the traditional appearance, these houses often incorporate energy-efficient technologies and practices to meet modern environmental standards.
